The Van Life
Many people dream of living in a van part-time or full-time. Like the other hardworking slaves of the salary-based income prison, I want excitement and adventure. The ability to drive around in Norway and Sweden and stay in a larger vehicle is a great way to experience that. Also, it is expensive in Norway. A cabin can cost from 400 NOK to over 1000 NOK for a night’s stay. I want to save that cost and use it towards fuel for the vehicle instead. Hotel or motel rooms are offered at the same prices. Camping in tents will cost from 200 NOK to 400 NOK, depending on where you choose to camp. RV parking for the night is often 100 NOK more than a tent. However, with a tent or an RV, you are still free to camp in the wild Norwegian countryside at absolutely no cost. Just remember to clean up after yourself for the next visitors. Tourists sometimes tend to litter and defecate everywhere.
Now who doesn’t want to just drive and explore?
Or just stop at a beautiful location and throw out a chair to enjoy the beautiful natural scenery around, or even go to sleep and wake up with birds chirping right outside your camper van?
A question often asked: Can you park an RV, motor home, or camper van anywhere in Norway?
Allemannsretten, the Norwegian right to roam, gives you free access to the beautiful and wild countryside, as long as you are careful and tread lightly. This right also gives you the right to park an RV, motorhome, or camper van beside the road in open countryside, as long as you show consideration and act with caution.
I often see converted cargo vans transformed into live-in vans on the road during the summer months. They are easy to spot, often with logos from rental companies in Norway as well as from other countries. Some examples of rental companies are: Road Surfers, Indie Campers, and Cabin Campers.
Either you are new to this lifestyle, just started it, or are more experienced. You will still need to learn and keep learning and try out different scenarios, solutions, or situations. I have collected some links to searches at my favorite places to learn more on the Internet.
