Norwegians have been blessed with a lot of inspirational input for new food experiences from other parts of the world. The local food industry has adapted new food dishes to the Norwegian taste buds. We have a best-selling pizza called Grandiosa (Wikipedia). According to the manufacturer, the Norwegian population consumes approximately 25 million pizzas annually. In the first year, it sold around 370,000 pizzas. Since its start in 1980, it has sold around 587 million pizzas.

Tacos are another popular food item that has been adapted to Norwegian taste. Fridays have become the standard weekday to eat tacos in Norway. It came to Norway in 1965 to Stavanger to please the American workers from Texas who were involved in the oil industry at that time, and has since then gained a lot of popularity. In 1973, the Old El Paso brand came to Norway. In 1991, Santa Maria, a Swedish brand, came to Norway offering Tex-Mex products.

Also, hot dogs and hamburgers have become popular things to eat. Especially from gas stations and kiosks. After a night out on the town drinking alcohol, it is good to get some food in the old belly, and a quick hot dog or burger to fill the hunger is often accepted. Places with McDonald’s or Burger King restaurants became popular, and with the drive-thru option, even more popular.

Still, the more traditional dinner dishes like kjøttkaker, potetball/komle, fårikål, and lapskaus/brensnut still hold it’s place in Norwegian cuisine.
